The Opening Gala of the Canberra

International Music Festival –

which this year explores the

theme of revolution and social

upheaval – will showcase the

festival’s international stars:

Venezuela’s Simón Bolívar String

Quartet straight out of El Sistema,

Canberra’s very own Lisa Moore

returning from New York, William

Barton on the didgeridoo and

more. The programme includes

the world premiere of Robert

Davidson’sBetty Beaver Blaze,

based on Oodgeroo Noonuccal’s

poemWhite Australia, featuring

William Barton, Clive Birch and

Luminescence Chamber Singers.

Lisa Moore will perform works

by JS Bach, Robert Schumann

and Frederic Rzewski, while

Canadian violinist Alexandre

da Costa will perform works by

Tomaso Antonio Vitali, Prokofiev,

Tchaikovsky and De Falla. The

Simón Bolívar String Quartet. will

perform Shostakovich’s Eighth

String Quartet. The programme

will also feature Chen Yi’sYanko

and Robert Davidson’sLandscape.
