I was in a bit of trouble when I first met Laura. I was
18 and had just been kicked out of college, and was
staying in rural Yorkshire with family friends to get
some perspective. One night, I was drinking in one
of the local pubs and Laura was there. I was very drunk, but
there was an instant connection – she was different to anyone
else I knew. I bumped into her the following day when I was
hungover and we went rambling around the Dales.
The summer we spent together was intense. She was the
first person I was open enough to get close to; she brought
out a part of me I wasn’t aware of. We also had lots of fun –
I remember for my birthday she arranged a treasure hunt.
Our break-up was very upsetting, even though it was
amicable. I was returning to the South and she was staying
up North, so we split up because of the distance. I was
quite directionless at that point and didn’t know what
I wanted from my future. I’m not sure that she did either.
It was such a great summer, and neither of us wanted to
tarnish it, so it just felt like the right time to end things.
Laura was instrumental in pushing me towards the career
that I have now, and I will be eternally grateful for that.
We’ve tried to keep in touch when we can, but platonically.
I even bumped into her nine months ago at a music festival.
The date felt a bit formal at first, which is unusual, as we’ve
always been so comfortable
with each other. After a few
jokes, though, it was just like
old times – except we both
looked better than we used to.

Would you see her again?
“Absolutely. We’ve been
through many things over
the years, and she will always
be one of my best friends.
She would be the proverbial
best man at my wedding.”
