GROOMING ESSENTIALS

Smells Like Team Spirit

WILL SPORTS FRAGRANCES MAKE YOU LIFT MORE OR RUN FASTER? PROBABLY NOT.
BUT THE BEST OF THESE SCENTS DESERVE A SPOT IN YOUR LOCKER.

The third incarnation
of the Dior Homme Sport
preserves its signature spicy,
woody scent. The main
difference is in the top
notes of the fragrance, where
the freshness has been dialled
up with more citrus via blood
orange, grapefruit and pear
extract. Pay attention to the
Eleni note, which gives way to
a lemony incense that
soothes your tired body.

This particular scent
promises an invigorating
and confident boost. The
fragrance first strikes with top
notes of refreshing mint, besides
having pineapple for its heart
notes – light and certainly not
overpowering. Still think that the
composition sounds too sweet?
It’s toned down by a cistus base
that lends a layer of aromatic
masculine scent.

If you prefer fragrances
that are discreet and subtle,
the Code Colonia is a viable
candidate. There’s a certain
masculinity despite the presence
of floral middle notes, helped by
a base comprising amber and
tonka. Though for most, the
focus will be on the fresh and
light citrus notes: bergamot,
pink peppercorns and mandarin.

$89.90-$119.90,

This variant by Carolina
Herrera spots bold yet
refreshing notes of bergamot
and grapefruit – propped up by
the presence of woody and
citrus accords. It’s not too
fruity, especially with a base
comprising sandalwood, oak
moss and vetiver, so you
can use it to double as a
go-to fragrance for a
dinner date.

Sports fragrances are something of an
oxymoron. If there’s one place fine fragrance
doesn’t belong, it’s in the confines of a gym,
where the combination of perfumer’s alcohol
and virile sweat is likely to do little more than
bring a rash out of you.
But maybe it’s best not to take these things
too literally. What the marketing-speak in
this case is really to denote its freshness.
“Sports fragrances are popular because,
psychologically, they energise the wearer,
cooling him down and making him feel
revived,” says Azzi Glasser, a perfume
designer for the likes of Reiss and Agent
Provocateur.
If you’re looking to call one your own, here
are a few choice sports scents.
