ALL NIGHT,

NO SLEEP

If you’ve made a habit of staying up too
late and sleeping in every morning, you
might be at greater risk of depression,
especially if you have type-2 diabetes,
according to a new study presented at
the Endocrine Society’s annual meeting.
Skimping on shut-eye alone raises your
risk of diabetes, and sleep disturbances
are also one of the most common signs
of depression, research suggests.

RAISE YOUR
GLASS
Think alcohol
wipes away your
memory? That
might not always
be the case,
researchers from
Scotland say,
believing that
alcohol may reduce
the formation of
new memories but
protect existing
ones, leaving them
less vulnerable to
interference.

BULK UP ON
YOUR D
No, no, not that
one. The vitamin.
Not getting enough
vitamin D may
seriously hinder
your strength
and athletic
performance, a new
study from the
University of Tulsa
suggests. D may
help your muscle
cells release calcium
more efficiently
during the muscle
contraction process,
which can lead to
faster and
more powerful
contractions, says
study author Rachel
Hildebrand.

300 MILLION
That’s the estimated
number of people in
the world who suffer
from depression, says
the World Health
Organization.
And nearly half of
those folks don’t
get treatment,
largely due to the
stigma surrounding
mental illness.

HAPPY
THOUGHTS
In a new study at
Penn State University,
scientists looked at
more than 1,000
people with coronary
heart disease over
a five-year period.
Patients who reported
having higher levels
of positive emotions
like determination,
excitement and
enthusiasm were
more likely to exercise,
sleep better and
avoid smoking. So
keep that smile going
and you’ll literally be
saving your life.

DON’T BE
MR LONELY
Studies reviewed
by the University of
Cambridge have shown
that social isolation is
just as harmful to your
health as the highest
indicators for morbidity
and mortality – namely
chronic obesity,
smoking, alcohol
abuse and high blood
pressure. Loneliness
is one of the biggest
health problems
facing us right now,
so remember to talk to
someone every once in
a while, right, bro?
