44 / AUDITION SPECIAL

How long will the audition class be?
The dance part of the audition normally runs
for approximately one and a half hours,
depending on called backs.

At what level are the classes pitched?
Intermediate to advanced level.

Will exercises be demonstrated on both sides
or one side only?
Progressions are normally demonstrated on
both sides.

Will I be asked to perform solo during the
audition class?
Before the dance audition commences, you’ll
be allocated a number. The progressions and
dance will be conducted in number order
normally in groups of four. There is no
requirement for you to perform solo.

Is it ok to ask questions?
It’s important that you understand what the
choreographer is explaining, so you can
execute it to your fullest potential. If at any
stage this is unclear, it is absolutely fine to ask
any questions needed.

Is it ok to ask for something to be
demonstrated again?
My colleagues and I are more than happy to go
over any steps missed.

If I am capable of doing something harder
than has been set in an exercise, should
I do it? Or should I stick to what has
been requested?
It is best to stick to the choreography
demonstrated. We are always on the lookout
for strong capable dancers, but most
importantly we are looking for humble

performers. If you can achieve a strong
double turn, it will be obvious to us that
you are more than capable of executing a
triple turn.

Will I get to choose where I stand or will we be
told where to stand?
The numbers allocated at the beginning of
the dance audition will dictate where you
stand in the audition room. We always run
in number order.

Will I need to do improvise?
There is no improvising in the dance audition.

Will I need to learn repertoire?
The dance audition begins with a short
warm-up followed by the progressions which
consist of kicks, turns and leaps. This then leads
into a short choreographed piece.

For musical theatre, do I take the vocal part of
the audition before or after the dance
part of the audition?
For music theatre, you’ll be required to do the
vocal (singing) part of the audition first, and
possibly your monologue.  If we would like to see
more from you that year, you will be notified by
phone at the end of that day.
If selected for the callback day, you will then be
required to sing again, participate in some acting
exercises, and finally dance.
Each of these callback sessions, held across
Australia, is filmed and this record helps us to
make decisions for final placements.

for the dance department at the Western
Australian Academy of Performing Arts or Ev and
Bow in Sydney.

It is recommended that you warm
up before the audition class starts.
