Synoptic situation
Low pressure from the Atlantic
will drive fronts across the
British Isles bringing unsettled
conditions. Slow moving
occluded fronts will produce
rain over Ireland and Scotland
while a trough will generate
showers over northern England.
The jet stream to the south of
Britain combined with colder air
in the upper atmosphere will
help to produce showers.

riday is looking like a
surprisingly windy day. The
winds are expected to pick
up tomorrow evening and by
Friday there will be the risk
of gales around northwestern shores,
possibly gusting up to 55mph, and it
will be a breezy day across the whole
UK. This would be unremarkable
and hardly worth mentioning later
in the year, but coming in June it is
rather surprising.
The genesis of this windy spell was
in the Gulf of Mexico, where a
tropical depression flooded much of
south Florida and Cuba with
torrential rain. As the storm moved
into the Atlantic on Sunday and
headed towards Bermuda, it swept
over seas about 1C above normal for
early June, giving it the energy to
boost its winds and grow into a
tropical storm called Alex, the first
named storm of the 2022 Atlantic
hurricane season. And Alex may be
a taste of what is expected to be an
active hurricane season, especially
around the Gulf of Mexico where
the seas are already unusually
warm.
But Alex was a short-lived affair
and by Monday evening it had lost its
tropical character and had grown
weaker. And as this ex-tropical storm
headed further northeastwards it
became absorbed into an Atlantic
depression, beefing it up with warm,
humid tropical air that gave it an
injection of extra energy and
invigorated its winds and rain. And
as that strengthened depression is
dragged across the Atlantic by the jet
stream, it is heading straight towards
the UK, eventually pummelling the
northwest with gusting winds and
some showers.
The remnants of tropical storms or
hurricanes hitting the UK with wet
and windy weather is not unusual.
But searching through the weather
archives, it is difficult to find another
example of something like this
hitting the UK in June. These
leftovers of tropical storms tend to
strike from August to October, and
particularly in September at the
height of the hurricane season. But
whether ex-tropical storm Alex is a
sign of things to come for the UK
this summer and autumn is not clear.
