Valyrian Steel in the

World of Fire and Ice

➢ Valyrian steel is the nest material for

swords in the world of Game of rones.

Lighter, stronger and sharper than any other

known metal, they were forged thousands of

years ago by Valyrian swordsmiths in Essos.

e blades are dark, with patterns resem-

bling our modern Damascus steel.

➢ e secret of the steel was lost when

Valyria was destroyed by a cataclysmic

event, known as the Doom. Now, only

a handful of blacksmiths from the city

of Qohor can rework the metal, but still

cannot recreate it.

➢ ere are believed to be thousands of

Valyrian weapons remaining in the world,

but according to Archmaester urgood

only 227 can be found in Westeros.

➢ e ancestral greatsword of House Stark

was named Ice. It was used by Ned Stark

in Episode One to behead the Night Watch

deserter. Ilyn Payne used Ice to behead Lord

Stark. Later, Tywin Lannister had the large

sword melted down and forged into two

swords, Oathkeeper, given by Jaime Lannister

to Brienne of Tarth, and Widows Wail, given

to Jeo rey Baratheon as a wedding gi.

➢ Daggers exist made of Valyrian steel; one

was used by the assassin who attempted to

kill Bran Stark.

➢ Samwell Tarly discovered an old book

claiming “Dragonsteel” could kill white

walkers. is is believed to be another name

for Valyrian steel. is theory is proven at

the battle of Hardhome, when Jon Snow kills

a white walker with his sword, Longclaw,

which was given to him by Lord Mormont.

➢ e Tarly family sword is named Hearts-

bane. Samwell took the sword when he le

his home with Gilly in Season Six.

➢ Maesters will wear a link of Valyrian

steel on their chains which signi es the

study of “higher mysteries” — the occult.
