Could these tips be the key to
your cheapest week ever?
Cosmo put it to the test – and
we didn’t even have to give up
our caffeine addiction!
BY NOW WE’VE HEARD
all of the ‘everyday tips’ to
saving money. Give up your
coffee! Save your fivers! Forgo
your smashed avo (never)!
But it’s just not helping – we
are still struggling to save.
As a generation we’ve been
priced out of the housing
market, branded entitled
and told that our brekky is
to blame for the lack of cash
we’re saving. But it’s no big
secret: house prices across
Australian capital cities are
at a sevenyear high (up 12.9
per cent from last year), which
makes the prospect of saving
for a home and enjoying a
life free of debt slim. With
the average Aussie putting
away $282 in savings per
month compared to $439 in
2011 *, we millennials have
been left behind, with no
nest egg in sight.
But here at Cosmo we got
to thinking. Our little daily
luxuries add up, sure, but
they keep us sane. What’s
really burning a hole in our
(teeny, tiny) pockets is those
unexpected expenses that
creep up week after week,
that we can’t always budget
for. After some hard research
and analysis (a Cosmo office
survey) to pinpoint the most
problematic ways our saving
goes awry, we asked shoe
addict/accountant Melissa
Browne for her best advice
on saving – offthebudget
style. All with the goal of
living on under $100 a week.
