She’s the reigning surfing
World Champion and hella fit
for it! After all, just one session
in the surf can burn around 1250
kilojoules. Sign us up!

What are the things you do
every single day?
‘I surf once or sometimes twice,
and I meditate as well. No matter
where I am in the world, I find
just being still for five minutes
a day makes a huge difference.’

What is your exercise regimen?
‘I like hikes and going out in
Mother Nature. My regimen is
to live a healthy life – get out
and explore. When you get out
and you go do something, you

end up mucking around for over
an hour in nature – and that,
combined with actively making
healthy life choices, is better than
any exercise regimen.’

Why is surfing a great workout?
‘Well, on average we burn about
300 calories (1250kJ) in a 45
minute session; if you do that
twice a day that’s 600 calories
(2500kJ)! It definitely keeps you
physically fit, but when you’re
doing something that you are
passionate about, something
that you love, it doesn’t register
as exercise. It’s also great for you
mentally because you’re out in
Mother Nature and that is a very
healing kind of environment.

You don’t have your phone on
you and you’ve got to be very
alert, taking in signs from the
ocean, the way it moves and flows,
and that’s a really nice, kind of
peaceful, thing to do.’

What body parts do you work
out while surfing?
‘Surfing is a wellbalanced sport.
You lay on a board and you need
balance; you stand up and need
balance. That’s working the core.
You need strong legs to carry you
through the waves; to paddle you
use your shoulders and back; to
duck dive you need everything.
It’s an allround workout.’

How do you stay grounded and
so chilled?
‘I enjoy meditating. I think it’s
very important in today’s society,
where we’re constantly distracted
by the outside world. It’s far too
easy to stop paying attention to
the way you feel about things. It’s
important to understand what
triggers you emotionally.’ #
