42 WHAT TRADIES WANT.
W
orking chippies will know there
are still a lot of old-school
carpenters and builders who
think cordless starts and
stops with smaller tools like drills, impact
drivers and recipros, and that the larger,
heavier power-draw tools just can’t keep
up – both in terms of power and battery life.
If this sounds like you, chances are you’ve
tried a battery-powered droppie onsite
somewhere over the last year or so and it
just didn’t quite do the job. Yes, it would
cut your material, but it wouldn’t cleanly rip
through with the gusto you’re used to.
This DeWALT could well be the saw that will
change your mind on the topic.
So, if you’re reading this thinking, “Nup.
Cordless drop saws just aren’t up to the
challenge,” then this information is aimed
squarely at you.
DOWN THE LINE
DeWALT’s 54V XR Flexvolt technology has
opened a realm of new possibilities when
it comes to successfully running typically
power-hungry tools like drop saws, table
saws, large, impact hammer drills and the
like. The 305mm compound sliding mitre
saw with XPS (cross-cut positioning system)
outperforms any laser we’ve seen on a mitre
saw. It fits into this exciting new category
being powered by two 54V XR Flexvolt
battery packs which provide 108 volts.
The saw also offers AC mode that allows
240V mains power when used in conjunction
with the included transformer.
When we had the opportunity to give this
beast a run we figured switching between the
battery and mains power would be where, if
any, the performance differences would show
up. To our surprise there was no variance in
the saw’s power or cutting ability at all. That
was really impressive.
In fact, we’d go as far as saying this
compound slide mitre saw is one of the very
best battery-powered droppies we’ve used
to date.
The saw provided outstanding cutting
performance in both small and large
profiles, and construction-grade timbers
up to 110mm x 303mm. The XPS shadow
line cut indicator provides fast and accurate
alignment of the blade while illuminating
the work for increased productivity. Even
the first-year apprentice will be producing
perfect, accurate cuts (as long as he or she
is cutting on the correct side of the pencil
line, of course).
The R&D team at DeWALT didn’t pull any punches when it set its
targets for this piece of equipment. Right from the start the team
set out to create its most powerful and feature-packed cordless
sliding mitre saw to date. WTW is pretty stoked they did.
