WHY I BOUGHT IT
Having spent a lot of time on
GS’s, I was lucky enough to ride
a pre-production version of the
Rallye X on the BMW GS Safari
and it became obvious that it’s
much more capable off-road. I
came up with the crazy idea of
riding from home, racing Finke
and crossing the Simpson
Desert. I thought that was a
good way to showcase the
versatility of the bike and the
I FINKE I CAN
fact that it’s pretty solid
off-road.
WHAT I DID TO IT
After seeing what the boys at
Finke do to their bikes, there are
a few things you notice. I
sourced some Fastway
adventure footpegs which are
about 40mm longer than
standard ’pegs, wide and sharp.
I’ve also got foam grips. The
grips that I’ve got are called
Grip Puppies and they just go
over the standard ones. The
next thing I needed was some
sort of leg support. I knew I
could come up with something
better than Steg Pegz for this
particular bike by modifying
where the pillion pegs normally
go. A contact of mine, who is an
engineer, offered to help and he
came up with the most
awesome solution.
There are also some standard
things we do to a GS to make it
more off-road friendly, such as
a headlight protector, stainless
steel valve cover protectors, a
GPS and tank bag for the ride to
Alice and across the Simpson. I
replaced the standard steering
damper with an adjustable
Touratech one. We fitted an
aftermarket gearlever, Pirelli
Scorpion Rally tyres for the race
and Pirelli Scorpion STR tyres
for the ride there and back.
