KAWASAKI KLR650
I have a close affi nity with the Kawasaki KLR650
after circumnavigating Australia on one in 2008
with a mate. We rode 17,000km in three months
with almost no mechanical faults. Sure it was
less comfortable than a BMW or KTM, but it was
also a quarter of the price, brand new.
I was broke when I did the trip and spent
about $1000 on aftermarket parts that included
panniers, a GPS, a gel seat cover and a few sets
of tyres.
So the bike was completely stock but it
handled everything with ease. Sure it needed
more power, better suspension and a whole
catalogue of accessories to make it more
comfortable, but for someone with less than
$10,000, it was perfect.
I was most happy with the size of the fuel
tank. I was tossing up between the Suzuki
DR650 and the KLR650 and settled on the KLR
purely because I didn't need to fi nd $500-$1000
for an oversized fuel tank (it already has 22L).
Fortunately for you, the bike hasn't changed
much in nearly a decade so take my word for
it when I say this bike is the ultimate budget
adventure machine! Editor's
