information. I know there must be three points here.Evaluate, um, evaluate what...I
forgot the second one, the third is evaluate, um...I cannot remember.Passive
learners mayread and know the every meaning of the words, but they cannot grasp,
theycannot critically think about the idea. (96 words)

Low Achiever
Wang: Thesecond characteristic isreflection and think, think deep or what, and
explained what means reflection. Reflection means you arethinking during reading
or what. It gives three examples. First one isconnection between theknowledge
you know and the new knowledge. And the second one, but I don’t remember the
second one and the third one isevaluation what, evaluate, maybewhat you get from
the reading, or the book or whatever. Oh, evaluatewhat are important in book. But I
don’t remember the last sentence.Passive learners willlisten to the lecture. But they
willnot think what is the next step to do. (106 words)

Observation
Based on quantity, the two protocols pertaining to the second characteristic remain
similar to each other. For the main idea of this part, Gao accurately grasped two key
words—“reflect”and“critical”while Wang recalled“think deep”instead of“think
critically”. In this episode, both of them used considerable amount of paraphrase to
form the discourse representation. And we can see that neither of them succeeded in
retelling all the three propositional units in the longest sentence:“you may make
connections between the new information and what you already know, identify
concepts that you may not understand very well, orevaluate the importance of what
you are reading.”The three points are quite lengthy and hence recalling all of them
is cognitively demanding. Further discussion will follow in Sect.8.7.2parsing
complicated sentences.

7.4.4 The Third Characteristic of Being an Active Learner

High Achiever
Gao: Ok, thethird one is totake comprehensive notes inan organized way. The
lecturer always foundastonished that thosepassive learners willcome to the class
without taking any notes. They doevery other things except taking the notes.Chatting
with the classmates andplay the mobile phone, maybe andsleep.Active learners
wrote down most of what the lecturer said in the class and being an active learner, you
shouldmore than simply present in the class, you shouldthink with the idea the
lecturer said. Theytake every notes, as much notes as they can. And they do not simply
present, they alsocontact the ideas of the lecturer conveys to them. (115 words)

Low Achiever
Wang: Thethird characteristic is tolistening carefully, doingcomprehensive notes,
um, I don’t remember the next. Professors all, are always amazed by the student
that aremore interested inactivities than lectures andpassive learners will, they
