5.5 Results of Questionnaire Survey...........................
The questionnaire data are analyzed via SPSS 21.0. Data analysis is composed of
descriptive statistics and exploratory factor analysis, presenting statistics extracted
from teachers’and students’questionnaire data in turn. The following sections
show the detailed results.
5.5.1 Descriptive Statistics..............................
The descriptive statistics mainly cover the basic information of the participants and
the mean score of each item in the skill section of the questionnaire.
5.5.1.1 Teachers
190 teachers from more than 50 colleges and universities covering most of the
Chinese provinces completed their questionnaires and the 3 unusual cases detected
by SPSS 21.0 were deleted. Altogether 187 questionnaires are valid for data pro-
cessing via SPSS. According to descriptive statistics (see Table5.3), the age of
teachers who responded to all the questions varies from the youngest 26 to the
oldest 65 with the mean age of 39.8 years. Their teaching duration also varies from
the shortest of 1 year to the longest of 49 years and the mean teaching duration is
15.65 years. Amongst the 185 teacher participants who have responded to the item
of teaching time, those with teaching duration below 10 years occupy 21.6%; those
with teaching experience from 10 years to 20 years take up 46.5% and those who
have taught over 20 years account for 31.9%. Thesefigures indicate that this
heterogeneous group of teachers has a relatively long teaching experience of
English as a foreign language and thus their seniority in college English teaching is
supposed to equip them with due knowledge of English teaching at the tertiary level
and its relevant proficiency tests, especially the Test for English Majors.
