TRAVEL
LEGEND:WEEK-LONG + TRIP LONG-WEEKEND TRIP WEEKEND TRIP

K

anangra-Boyd is a core 4WDer’s fantasy located near Lithgow, almost within winching
range of Sydney’s far western outskirt. There are some proper, slippery, muddy offroad
tracks just begging to be conquered, as well as a couple of top-notch campsites.
The best part is that it’s close enough to Sydney town for a proper weekend escape
without wasting too much time on the highway, and you could even manage a daytrip out
here if you were really keen.
The park protects a series of undulating ridges and plateaus draped in dense eucalypt
forest and bisected by the winding Kowmung River. It was declared a wilderness two decades
ago and is worth a visit for the scenery alone.

KANANGRA-BOYD NP, NSW DESTINATION NSW

STUFF TO DO
The gravel road between Lithgow and Kanangra Wells is suitable for all
4WD vehicles, although the steep descent to Dingo Dell requires low
range in muddy conditions and is better suited to higher clearance vehicles.
Bushwalking is part of the heritage of the area, with the name
Kanangra being appropriated from a family of hikers that traversed
the park’s trails early last century. Walk out to the plateau above Kanangra
Wells for an untramelled view of the landscape’s majesty.

IMPORTANT INFO
200km inland from Sydney’s central business district,
access is via the Great Western Highway and Jenolan
Caves Road.
Camping is available at Dingo Dell, Boyd River and
Jenolan camping areas, with basic facilities including
toilets, re rings and picnic tables provided.
Fuel is available at Lithgow and Oberon.
