Better Homes and Gardens Australia — December 2017

4 If you’re worried
about reduced
storage, hit the
shops in search
of a bed with
hidden storage
underneath (yep,
they’re drawers
under there to
hold loads of
stuff!). Allow for
built-in robes, too.
Then continue
the holiday vibe
with a framed
tropical print
above the bed,
and accessories.

5 You might like
to use the second
bedroom for
hosting visitors,
or – if you’re
expecting – the
baby’s nursery.
Whatever the
bedroom furniture
you choose, ensure
that the space
feels light and airy
during the daytime
with white-painted
walls. Also allow
full control of
natural light with
white shutters,
curtains or blinds.

6 Wanting a
simple, fresh and
modern look in the
bathroom? Specify
stone-coloured
tiles for the floor
and white for
walls. You can save
on the installation
costs in this room
by fitting the glass
shower panels,
vanity cabinet and
mirror yourself.
Tool time!

If you’re planning on going
ahead with being the boss
on the site, here are the tips
you need to make the process
easier and more successful.

  • Do your research Apart
from getting the best prices on
    materials and trades, know the
    regulations and requirements
    for the project you’re doing.
    Ask lots of questions!

  • Be available Don’t think you
can be the builder by leaving
notes or being at the end of a
    phone. Be around to answer
    questions, make decisions and
find out what will be needed
    next. This will avoid mistakes
or delays, which will all end up
    costing money – your money.

  • Stay ahead of the game An
    efficient building project is a
    carefully choreographed dance.
Be aware of what will be required
when and how long it will take
to get there. If you didn’t order
the windows in time for work to
    proceed, then everything grinds
to a halt, meaning more work for
    you to rearrange everything you
    had already carefully planned.

  • Know the value of your time
Sometimes it’s better to do your
regular job to earn the money
to pay the pros. They’ll probably
do it in less than half the time
    and with better quality, too.

  • Get advice It might be
    worthwhile to hire a builder
who can act as a consultant or
    project manager. Their wisdom
    and knowledge may end up
saving you more than they cost,
    in both time and money.
