VERTICAL GARDEN

Gather your supplies

• 1.2m long bearers from
  recycled pallets (2)


• Preserving jars (8)


• 78-102mm stainless-steel
  hose clamp (8)

You’ll also need

Drill with 5, 8 and 9mm drill bits;

9mm hollow wall anchors and

setting tool; 20mm galvanised

button head screws; river sand;

decorative pebbles; screwdriver

Here’s how

STEP 1 Drill 5 holes, 5mm wide,

through bearer, evenly spaced along

its length. Place bearer against wall

in its final position and drill through

holes to mark wall. Drill holes at each

marked point with a 9mm drill bit.

STEP 2 Place hollow wall anchor into

setting tool and insert into hole. Pull

trigger on tool to set anchor into wall.

Remove screw from anchor and retain.

STEP 3 Through holes in bearer,

use an 8mm drill bit to countersink

for heads of screws from wall

anchors. Stop countersink holes

20mm from full depth of timber.

STEP 4 Reposition bearer and insert

screws from wall anchors through

countersink holes and into anchors.

Tighten to hold bearer against wall.

STEP 5 Repeat Steps 1 to 4 to

attach second bearer to wall.

STEP 6 Drill 2 holes through centre

of hose clamp. Attach to bearer

with 20mm button head screws.

Repeat to attach all hose clamps,

spacing them about 250mm apart.

STEP 7 Pop out centre ring and screw

lid onto jar. Fill to three-quarters full

with paving sand. Place succulent

cutting in sand then fill remainder

of jar with decorative pebbles.

STEP 8 Close clamps to form a loop.

Place jar in clamp and use screwdriver

to tighten. Repeat for all jars.
