STEP 18 Cut ends of 1 stile (Z) at a 10°

angle. Working from long side of angled

cut, mark positions of step treads (AA).

Make top of first tread 455mm from end

and remaining treads at 275mm centres.

Use a sliding bevel set at 10° to mark

tread thickness. Edge of tread is 16mm

from edge of stile. Drill 4mm clearance

holes through centre of each tread.

STEP 19 To mark hand holes in stile,

use combination square to draw a line

50mm from edge of stile opposite to

treads. Measuring from the same end

as in Step 18, mark along this line at

150, 375, 550, 650, 825, 925, 1100,

1200, 1375, 1475, 1650 and 1750mm.

STEP 20 Using a 57mm hole saw, drill

holes with the positions marked in

Step 19 as the centre of each hole.

STEP 21 Use a jigsaw to cut out

ladder stile between pairs of holes.

STEP 22 Using a trimmer fitted

with a 6mm rounding-over bit,

round edges of holes.

STEP 23 To secure ladder to bookcase,

cut a slot from edge of stile on line

of underside of top tread. Make slot

21mm long and 19mm deep.

STEP 24 Repeat Steps 18-23 to

create second ladder stile.

STEP 25 To construct ladder steps,

fix ladder riser (BB) into ladder

tread 5mm from edge of tread.

STEP 26 Align steps with marked

positions on 1 ladder stile (see Step 18)

and screw together. Repeat to attach

other stile to open ends of steps.

STEP 27 Undercoat and paint ladder.

For a more durable finish, apply 2 coats

of oil-based flooring polyurethane.

STEP 28 To attach ladder, make slots

cut in Step 23 slide over top shelf of the

bookcase. Screw on an angle through

the top of bookcase into the stile.
