a new awareness. Without a
doubt one of my favourite Old
Masters is a 17thcentury Dutch
Golden Age painter Adriaen
Coorte, who painted small and
unpretentious still lifes, but full
of quiet beauty and intimacy.
My favourite medium has
always been oils, and later I
added acrylic to my list. But in
2007 I discovered Prismacolor
coloured pencils and fell in love
with them. Recently, I developed
a new “mixed media” technique
which allows you to achieve
incredible realistic effects,
using colour pencils, pastel and
gouache. For this technique I
prefer textured paper such as Art
Spectrum Colourfix. It comes in
many colours and it is a superb
surface with fine deep tooth that
holds multiple layers of pastel
and pencil. Its texture is perfect
for depicting natural textures such
as stones, and wood. Also, I love
doing animal fur and feathers
on it. The good thing about this
paper is that it is still possible
to achieve a very “smooth” look
on it with proper application of
colour pencils. Also, it could
be underpainted with any “wet”
media. Even though this paper
eats my pencils quite quickly, I
believe the result is worth it.
