THE WICK 338

JUNE 6, 1976

The notorious sands of The Wick 338 debuted on the AMA Pro Motocross
schedule in the summer of 1976. The race was won by Dutch sand master Pierre
Karsmakers riding a factory Honda. That same race also marked the debut on
the national scene for local photographer Paul Buckley, who had never shot a
professional motocross race. At some point during the day, he captured this
photo of fourth-place finisher Kent Howerton; it would become the first photo
Buckley ever had published in Motocross Action magazine. Husqvarna then
bought the photo for a promotional poster, and years later it would end up on
another poster as part of Dunlop’s Legends series! (Incidentally, this photo was
not taken on the Buckley Berm, the corner which was eventually named after
the iconic photographer.) If you want to see all the results from the Southwick
National over the years, check out vault.racerxonline.com.
