his month I have decided to review a match I
watched not too long ago.
The position of the bowls is very important as it is all
about angles and percentage of success- the diagrams
will show how the vital bowls are positioned but as it’s
not a singles match I have restricted the bowls to just a
few that are in key positions.
The skip is five shots down and has to make a decision
whether to draw to save, drive at the jack or play
the percentages to reduce the count (but in playing
that shot they have to accept there is little chance of
scoring the shot).
Many factors come in to play in this situation and it’s
difficult to know exactly what to do, but as usual there
is a best shot to play to achieve what you want.
The match was already secured
but that may not affect the final
selection of shot. This was all about
the final scoreline not the outcome
of the match and it was
outdoor, hence it had
all the problems of an
outdoor green and
the vagaries of the
weather.
