Interesting fact about Jonny Bell; Tommy
Fleetwood once broke a bone in Jonny’s arm,
during an arm wrestle at England training camp.

My caddy noticed I’d teed up in front of tee
marker on 18 today, 2 shot penalty, 1st day with
me, honest as the day is long. #Integrity

(365) of TG. While I see his point,
there is nothing stopping you taking
a drop a la Jordan Spieth in The
Open. The real reason a club golfer
wouldn’t do it is their lack of
understanding of the rules. As far as
perfect greens go, don’t forget
Spieth and every pro has come
through the ranks at some stage as
club golfers. They are athletes in
their own right and the assistance
they receive is no different from any
other elite performer. The same
could be argued for Premier League
footballers, who have dietitians,
psychologists and coaches to allow
them to just turn up, play and
perform at their best.

77 reasons to get fitted
I have always been somewhat
dubious about the claims made in
relation to the benefits of club fitting
for the average mid-to-high
handicapper (I play off 18).
My doubts were confirmed when,
after taking delivery of a brand new
set of custom-fitted clubs, I shot 103
in my first round using them. For
some reason, the clubs which had
worked so well on the range wouldn’t
work on the course.
To say that I was frustrated would
be an understatement and while I
was tempted to chuck my new sticks
into the nearest lake and revert to
my (very) mixed bag of woods,
hybrids and 20-year-old Big Bertha
irons, I decided to persevere. Next
time out, I shot 83. Encouraged, I
played again 24 hours later and shot

a 77 – my lowest score ever. Am I a
convert to custom fitting? You bet!

Unacceptable decision
I was appalled when I read Gareth
Jones’ letter (issue 366) about the
total crassness of this golf club. How
can this decision be allowed to
stand? The buffet has no direct
relationship to the round of golf. If I
was Gareth, I would take option D
and make a formal complaint to the
Committee and attach a copy to the
county chairman. As far I’m
concerned, this is a breach of golf
rules and poor etiquette on behalf of
the golf club.

Magical municipals
I am lucky enough to live in a part of
the UK where I am blessed with
many fine golf courses in a 10-mile
radius, including Wallasey and Royal
Liverpool. There are also several
municipals dotted around such as
Hoylake municipal, which doubles as
a practice ground when the Open
comes to the Wirral. Municipals can
offer amazing value for money and
for just over £30 a month, I can
enjoy all of the local council’s
facilities including unlimited use of
four golf courses. I think it’s high
time for the TG Top 50 municipals!

The frustrating game
How can you forget to play golf? I
played last week, shot 82 off 11, and
all was good. Then I played at the
weekend – first hole, top, top, thin,
double. Next hole par. Next hole
pulled one into the water. Next hole...
par. Aaaarrrrgh! My inconsistency is
driving me mad – if I just get keep
those “others” down to bogeys I’d be
much happier? I can hit the ball, I
can chip, I can putt... I just can’t
seem to have a round without at
least one disaster hole. Help!
