DRIVING Fault: Striking drives out of the toe
Fix: Check set-up... and maintain
your posture

Your “reward” for a toe strike is the sight
of a ball flight your auntie could better,
the ball fighting a losing battle against
gravity before dropping quickly back to
earth, often accompanied by a curious
hook shape. But are you sure the ball
came out of the toe? And if so, what can
you do about this energy-sapping
Understand and cure this yard-sapping strike miscue? Here are some answers.

Decoding

the toe

1

Is it definitely a toe?
The best way to be sure is to
clean the face of the driver,
swing and look for the impact
mark; modern faces, especially
black ones, tend to leave a
telltale imprint. If this doesn’t
work you can apply footspray to
the face to make the mark stand
out. Finally look for the quick
draw shape, the result of the
reverse-spin gearing effect
created when impact causes the
face to open.

Where does the toe
strike come from?
Toe strikes happen when the
hands are moving inwards,
towards the body, through
impact. This means the famous
out-to-in swing path is often the
culprit, as the path of the club
through impact increasingly pulls
the toe into a collision course
with the ball. But toe strikes can
also be caused by loss of posture
during the downswing; when the
golfer straightens up.
