False start
A lack of flexibility in the spine, hips or pelvis
can see the shoulders simply rotate with the
hips, at the start of the downswing, causing
this dreaded over-the-top move.

Improve core
flexibility
Place you driver
in front of you,
grip-down. Rest
your palms on the
clubhead, arms
outstretched. Bend
your trail knee across
your lead leg and
hook the foot behind
it as shown. Using
the driver as support,
twist gently back and
through. Switch legs
to work on both sides
of your pelvis.

How the screen test
relates to the swing
When an elite player starts the
downswing, the first part to move is the
lower body. The hips and pelvis rotate
to lead the motion, while the shoulders
briefly remain turned. This sets up
good downswing sequencing, as the
golfer unwinds from the ground up.

Improved path
But this sequence also
affects path by helping
to drop the arms and
club onto more of an
inside track. This allows
a neutral or in-to-out
attack, promoting a
straight shot or a draw.
