t wasn’tlongago,eightyearsto be exact,
th attherewasno bowhuntingallowedin
Greenland.Butthanksto thehardwork
of Frank Feldmann, owner of Bowhunting
Greenland and an accomplished bowhunter
hi mself,thatall changedin 2012.Makeno mis-
take, it tooka concertedandcarefulpolitical
effortandplainolddoggeddeterminationon
th e partof Frankto establishan archeryseason
fo r muskoxandcaribouon thebigisland.Since
th en,Greenlandhasbecomeoneof theBow-
hunterst aff ’sfavoritehuntingdestinations.
Back in 2012, I received an e-mail from
Frank letting me know he wasconducting a
“t esthunt”for muskox todetermine if bow-
hunting couldbe legalized inGreenland. In
short order, my flightswere booked, and we
wereon thecountry’sfirst-evermuskoxbow-
hunt. Our group, which included four bow-
huntersfromthreedifferentcountries,wasso
successfulin harvesting muskox thatGreen-
landofficialsapprovedbowhuntingformuskox

onthespot.Afterward,theygaveus bowhunt-
ingpermitsforcaribou.But,a majorproblem
developedwhentheweathertooka dramatic
tu rnforthe worst,which preventedus from
huntingcaribou.
Thefo llowingyear,afterharvesting a tro-
phy muskox, Editor Curt Wells became the
firstAmericanto arrowa caribou inGreen-
land.TheyearafterCurt’stripto Greenland,
BowhunterPublisherJeff Waringtooka phe-
nomenalcaribouand a muskox. At first,we
weren’t sure what subspecies of caribou in-
habitedGreenland. Eventually,the Popeand
Young Clubruled theywere CentralCanada
BarrenGroundcaribou.
WhenI leftGreenlandsixyearsago,I viv-
idlyremembervowingto returnandhuntcari-
bouwithFrank.So,lastyearI madeplansto do
ju st that.Now,fast-forwardto September2018,
whenwe arrivedin Greenlandwithtwoother
bowhunters— Tim Neitzelfrom Wisconsin,
and CharlesRobinsonfromMichigan.
