A ‘glorious gift’
from my geriatric
pregnancy
At 35, a year after marrying
my partner of eight years,
and right on cue, I fell pregnant.
My husband and I knew how
lucky we were that at our age
it only took a few months.
Unlike some, I didn’t suffer
morning sickness, which was
a blessing because, as a food
photographer, I was around food
24/7. I laughed with friends that
my pregnancy was a ‘geriatric
pregnancy’ since I was 35-plus.
I certainly didn’t feel geriatric.
Like all pregnant women,
between the 26- and 28-week
mark I headed to the clinic for
my glucose tolerance test.
I quietly smiled at the other
pregnant women who were, like
me, sitting in a chair for two
hours after drinking a bottle of
sugar and getting blood taken at
intervals. One of the ‘perks’ of
having a geriatric pregnancy is
you are at a much higher risk of
gestational diabetes (GD). Yay.
In the obstetrician’s office, the
results came in. I was told my
fasting reading was high.
