Diabetic Living Australia – May-June 2019

(やまだぃちぅ) #1
Take the remaining walk down
to Matilda Bay on another day, or
come back for a day of exploring.
Climb the spiralling steps of
the DNA Tower, or discover the
state’s native flora in the Western
Australian Botanic Garden. There
are several trails you can explore
varying in length and terrain.
Most are on pavement, however,
some trail out onto soft ground.
To ensure the track you select
is suitable for your mobility and
fitness level, visit the Visitor Centre
or bgpa.wa.gov.au/kings-park.

WHAT ELSE

TO DO IN

K ings Park?

Park Authority continues to
preserve the area, ensuring the
sacred place and culture
associated with the local
Aborigines is maintained.
To get into this park, we
present you with three optional
routes from the cafe:

  • The first option: head back,
    turning left, onto Mounts Bay
Road. Then turn left onto Spring
Street (this street has an incline),
and left once again onto Bellevue
Terrace. This route will take you
into Kings Park to the Flame of
    Remembrance and Pool of
    Reflection.

  • The second option: head up
the steps of Jacob’s Ladder, near
the cafe. Well known to fitness
    fanatics, climb the 242 concrete
steps (making sure you stick to
the left to allow people to pass
you in either direction) into Kings
    Park, continuing to the Flame

and Pool. Note that this is the
shortest route.

  • The third option: and the
    most challenging (only follow this
route if you want more of a
    challenge than the second
    option). Leaving the cafe, turn
    right onto Mounts Bay Road.
    Following the road alongside the
Swan River, you will come across
    Kennedy’s Fountain – a small
    stone structure, built in 1861,
    which provided Perth with its
first public water supply. If you
    have reached The Old Brewery
    and Riverside Brewhouse, you
have gone too far! Heading up the
steps here into Kings Park, you
    will find yourself following the
    Kokoda Walk Trail. This path
consists of 150 steep steps that
will take you up 62 metres. To
    continue with the walk, turn
right onto the footpath at the
top to then make your way
