Western Australia’s fishing industry has
another large new aluminium monohull but
unlike other additions to the fleet in the last
few years, this one is not initially targeting the
state’s lobster fishery.

Fabrications in Henderson, just south of
Fremantle, the 26.2m by 6.72m Ada Clara is
expected to wet fish in deep water up and
down the coast, venturing as far south as
Augusta and up to Exmouth, where owner
Western Wild Fisheries is based.
Onboard accommodation reflects that the
boat is expected to spend up to five days at a
time at sea. There are two cabins with queen
size bunks – the master cabin also featuring
an ensuite – plus six single berths. A large
common area with satellite television is
located in the wheelhouse with the galley and
accommodation on lower levels.
The main machinery space houses a pair of
Yanmar 6AYEM-GT diesels rated at 749kW,
which enables use of a MED 2 ticker holder
under NSCV. The Yanmars spin one-metre
diameter props via 2.48:1 gearboxes.
This level of power was good enough for
upwards of 25kt on trials, though the boat can
be expected to spend more of its anticipated
1500 hours per year with less throttle. The
boat achieved 19kt at 75 per cent MCR and

16.5kt at half power. Tanks are provided for
up to 11,000 litres of diesel.
Geraldton Marine Electronics contributed
to the electronics package, which includes
a Furuno sounder and the WAASP multi-
beam sonar. There are slave monitors
on the flybridge and CCTV to monitor
onboard activity.
THT Marine provided two Coelmo DTL3950generators. These are manufactured in
Italy using Kubota diesel engines MeccAlte
alternator providing 39.5kVA.
Although developed for wet fishing, Ada
Clara has been designed and built with a
potential change of career in the mind for the
future, with the ability to convert to lobster
or even offshore service work incorporated
from the outset.
