Choose hedging that brings extra interest. This copper

beech Fagus sylvatica Atropurpurea Group produces

red leaves that turn purple with age

a brick wall that contributes to the

sheltered vegetable patch on the

edge of the plot, and a selection of

mature trees, including yew, horse

chestnut, cedar and handkerchief

tree Davidia involucrata.

More recent additions include the

stone terrace, which the Barnes have

slightly widened to accommodate their

children and love of entertaining. Box

balls planted close to the house bring

a hint of formality to this area.

The garden’s limited colour palette

ensures a feeling of unity, with liberal

plantings of white ‘Iceberg’ shrub roses

at the front of the house and elsewhere.

A deep border alongside the

gravelled driveway is populated

by a selection of perennials with

predominantly blue and pink flowers,

while the shrubbery shines with the

golden hues of Cotinus coggygria

Golden Spirit (‘Ancot’), and Choisya

ternata Sundance (‘Lich’).

Another key colour used in the

garden is red, seen in the juvenile

leaves of a carefully clipped copper

beech hedge adjoining an outbuilding.

This hue is picked up by a dark pink

climbing rose on the tunnel. All in all,

the planting adds up to a beautiful

space for the entire family to enjoy.

“We were very fortunate to take on

such a lovely garden and we’re slowly

making it our own,” says Charlie, who

grew up on a farm. “We’ve already

learned a lot and know there’s more

to discover the longer we’re here.”
