ADB LEGENDS
STEFAN EVERTS
EVERTS HOLDS the record
for the most Motocross
World Championship wins.
The Belgian notched up his
10th title in 2006 and
subsequently retired. His
father, Harry Everts, was
also a world champion,
winning four. Arguably one
of the greatest motocross
riders of all time, Everts
remained in the sport
following his retirement,
taking up a position with the
KTM factory team and later
owning and running his own
Suzuki team. Not
surprisingly, his son Liam is
showing a lot of promise.

ARE YOU A DIRTBIKE VIRGIN? FEAR NOT, THIS IS DYLAN RUDDY’S ONE-STOP GUIDE TO THE
WONDERFUL WORLD OF OFF-ROAD MOTORCYCLING
HOW TO: CLEAN AN AIR FILTER
DIRTBIKES REQUIRE REGULAR maintenance and if you want to save
money, then it pays to learn how to do it yourself. One of the easiest
jobs to master is cleaning the air fi lter. The fi lter stops all that dirt and
dust getting inside the engine.
LEARN THE ROPES Bikes have different ways to secure the air fi lter.
Consult your bike’s manual and learn where the airbox is and how to
remove the air fi lter. Remove it carefully, ensuring no dirt or dust falls
into the inlet tract for the engine to swallow and take careful note of
how it sits in the airbox.
OIL OFF Use a specialised air fi lter cleaner to break down the old air
fi lter oil. Tip some of the cleaner on it and squeeze it through. You can
also use turpentine or kerosene. In an emergency, some people have
used petrol, though we don’t recommend this, as it will signifi cantly
reduce the life of the fi lter and can ignite if the engine backfi res.
WASH AND WEAR Once all the old fi lter oil is broken down, wash the
fi lter in some warm, soapy water. You can use washing machine
detergent, but shampoo or dishwashing liquid works well too. Make sure
you thoroughly rinse the fi lter with clean water once you’re done.
DRY IT OUT Let the fi lter dry completely. If you’re stuck for time,
squeeze it in a towel or clean rag and then hang it in front of a fan.
Don’t put it in your clothes dryer as the heat will destroy the foam and
your mum will go nuts.
FRESH OIL Tip some fresh fi lter oil on it. Don’t use too much, but make
sure you squeeze the oil through so that the fi lter is completely covered
in the oil colour.
GREASE YOUR LIPS Spread some grease around the rubber edge of
the fi lter where it seals to the airbox. This will help prevent dirt getting
in any gaps. Once you’re done, reinstall the fi lter, making sure that it
seals all the way around.
