WHAT HAPPENED
BACK THEN...
Shane Watts started his attack
on the AMA Grand National
Cross Country series with wins
in rounds one and two and a
second in round three after a
cartwheeling crash in the last
kilometre when trying to pass
Scott Summers for the lead.
Chad Reed’s lengthy run
of wins came to an end at
round four of the Supercross
Masters in Brisbane when
Michael Byrne charged from
the back of the pack to take
the win. Reed fi nished fourth
but was riding injured from
an incident in practice.
Reed had reason to smile
after the Mildura Supercross
as his win there made him
Australia’s youngest 250cc
Supercross Champion.
Johnny Alphabet (possibly
a pseudonym) wrote in to
ask what was the best letter
the blokes at ADB had ever
received. Clubby claimed a
B in 2 Unit English at high
school, Tom Foster an A in
Rifl emanship at the naval
academy and Tuffy an X on
the last video he had rented.
Doug Lampkin won the
opening two rounds of the
World Trials Championship in
Spain and Portugal. The fi rst
World Trials Champ was his
father Martin in 1975.

news, Andrea Bartolini (Yamaha), Frédéric Bolley (Honda) and
Alessio Chiodi (Husqvarna) won the 500, 250 and 125 MX World
Championships respectively while a 16-year-old Chad Reed made his
supercross debut in Newcastle.
