Wehave,however,hada breakthrough,

thanksinnosmallparttoSportingGun.

It appears that my favourite bathtime

yourarticles,whichhaveconvinced

herthatmaybeit isn’tallthatbad.She

petroleumjelly(Vaseline).Whilepetroleum

jellyisa goodmoisturerepellent,ithaspoor

lubricatingpropertiesandshouldnotbeused

asgungrease.InMikeGeorge’sexcellentbook

TheShotgunHandbook, thesectiononshotgun

cleaningspecifically says not to use Vaseline for

thatreason.

Andnow,a gripe:onthecoveroftheMarch

issueyouadvertiseanarticleontheFaustiSL

andanotherontheMirokuMK 6000 Sporter.

BothareexcellentarticlesthatI wouldhave

likedtohavekept.However,oncompleting

thecompetitionsonpages 88 and 89 and

removingthepagestopost,I foundthatI lost

a pageofeacharticleastheybackedontothe

competitionpages.Woulditnotbepossibleto

havealltheadverts/competitions/subscription

offersback-to-back,soasnottoloseinteresting

articleswhen pages they have to be removed

topost?

havemuchchoiceaboutwherethosepages

go.I willtrynottodoitagain.AsforVaseline,

youandMikeGeorgearebothrightinthatit

isonlya verylightgrease,sowouldnotbea

goodenoughlubricantforsaytheknuckleofa

shotgun,wheretheheatfromrapid fi ring would

causetheVaselinetomelt.

However,thelockworkona gunwon’tbe

subjecttosuchhightemperaturesandonly

requiresverylightlubrication.Asa ruleof

thumb,I wouldsayalwaysusethecorrectgrease

oroilforthejobassomeoilsolventscandamage

sealsonairguns,orstripthelubricant from a

component on other guns.
