ake out your sketchbooks, pencils
and colours this month and follow
David Bellamy’s advice to produce
montages of your preferred subjects. Our favourite artist and
adventurer presents beautiful – and humorous – studies of Arctic
wildlife (pages 12 to 16), but the methods he demonstrates will
help you to paint any subject. Tell a story, show the life-cycle of a
flower, paint the seasons or a loved one’s face – there is no limit
to this way of working when you allow your imagination to flow.
This issue is also packed with exercises and practical advice to
help you loosen up and find your own personal style of painting.
If you are at the stage when you have basic techniques under your
belt, you’ll probably want to work out how you can present your
own voice and John Mitchell (pages 46 to 49) offers superb
guidance and ten exercises to help you find it. In fact, throughout
the entire issue there’s a wealth of advice on finding inspiration,
from experimenting with new materials and techniques and
looking at the work of others to honing drawing skills and even
practising yoga exercises (see Julia Thorley’s letter on page 10).
Although we’re all creative, sometimes we just need a bit of help
to keep us motivated, inspired and producing our best work.
As I write this, the final entries to Leisure Painter’s Open
Competition and the Art Club of the Year have come in and I
would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part.
The competition judging and subsequent exhibitions at Patchings
Art Centre over the summer months are high points in LP’s year
and I’m already looking forward to meeting fellow judges this
month to view all the work and begin the next stage of the process.
Enjoy your month of painting – I hope the following pages will
inspire you to produce your next masterpiece!
