The British summer certainly isn’t something that can be relied
on to deliver long, sun-drenched days in which to luxuriate in
painting light-filled landscapes. But, for those of you who
delight in working en plein air, that’s often the point. Trying to
capture rapidly changing light, sudden showers and wandering
clouds is part of the challenge, alongside struggling to suggest
the magisterial beauty of the countryside. In our 10-page
outdoor painting guide (page 52), two great artists share their secrets to success so
you can make creative use of the summer months, whatever weather they bring.
And that’s just part of our jam-packed, 100-page special issue. We also take
you on an in-depth tour of the illustration scene (page 26) with 11 pages of
insight, tips and tricks of the trade for those looking to break in and build a
career. Our chat with BBC broadcaster and art lover Andrew Marr (page 18)
introduces the passionately painterly work of one of Britain’s most important –
but often overlooked – artists, Gillian Ayres, while award-winning painter
Diarmuid Kelley (page 69) lets us in on the technical tricks behind his striking
new work. And that’s on top of our usual wealth of advice and inspiration, from
free drawing in acrylics (page 90) and tips for loosening up (page 74) to
discovering new ways of working with watercolour (page 63) and taking your first
steps with digital drawing (page 66). Here’s to a fruitful summer of painting!
