Artists & Illustrators 5YOUR LETTERS
back to work with Churchill
I loved drawing and painting when I was younger – I come from a family
of artists. At school they labelled me with dyslexia, but I was good at
art, and it was my love and passion. Then I left school and went straight
into the building trade and art was left behind. This is the fi rst painting
that I have done since I left school. I am 32 years old, and have not
even picked up a pencil to draw.
I painted this because I have been reading about Churchill and the
brave people who gave their lives to give us a better life today. I am
hoping to get the work
into a gallery or auction
it. Then with the money
that the picture sells
for, I will donate half to
the Royal British
Legion to help with
the amazing work
that they do.

Spring cleaning around my studio
gives me an opportunity to go over
my old artworks and gather all the
unfi nished – as well as badly
fi nished – paintings. I feel these left
behind works still have potential,
so I’m going to try to save some.
This is done in two major steps:
fi rst, like a doctor I examine the
painting in order to diagnose it.
I defi ne what exactly is not working.
Next, I come up with a plan – a
creative solution – and I apply it
on the painting.
The images here are ‘before’ and
‘after’ of my watercolour, Be My
Guest. The before image shows the
painting, done with a limited
palette, lacked energy and looked
cold. The after image shows how
the right treatment – adding bold
colours and warm hues – can make
a great difference to the fi nal result.
Sometimes with extreme measures,
you can save a painting.
