T
his has been a damp June
so far, drenched in some
heavy downpours,
frequently blanketed under
grey skies, and feeling cool.
Last Sunday many parts of England
and Wales were actually colder
during the jubilee street parties than
on New Year’s Day.
There have been a few stand-out
surprises this month, though.
Scotland had been largely dry,
especially in the north and east, and
Altnaharra in the Highlands had
been one of the UK’s sunniest
places, with long hours of sunshine.
However, it’s all change now
across much of the northern half of
the UK, with wet and windy
weather, especially grim over
western Scotland and Northern
Ireland. In contrast, southern areas
of Britain are seeing more sunshine
and warmer conditions.
The stormy weather in the north
came from the remnants of Tropical
Storm Alex that had died out in the
Atlantic. The tropical remains of the
storm were scooped up into a fairly
average depression, beefing it up
into a surprisingly vigorous gale for
June. That depression is taking a
side swipe at the northwest of the
UK, the strongest winds and the
most prolonged rain pummelling
central and northern Scotland. It is
also making a blustery weekend just
about everywhere in the UK,
although the southeast has the best
of the sunshine and highest
temperatures. But tomorrow is
reasonably fair for most of the
country as high pressure calms
down the atmosphere, although the
northwest carries on breezy.
Next week the high pressure
gradually builds up and conditions
grow calmer. And this will set the
pattern for the rest of June, as high
pressure from the south wrestles
with low pressure trying to push into
the northwest from the Atlantic.
Things may hot up. Western
Europe is facing a fierce heatwave,
with a southerly air flow into the UK
that could eventually draw in some
very warm air from the continent
and send temperatures higher in
southern areas, possibly by next
weekend.
