one-third of our committees can be made
up of a single category, e.g., manufactur-
ers, surveyors, and even government. is
rule penetrates all aspects of ABYC’s busi-
ness. We all strive to create balanced
groups that participate in ABYC’s work—
from the project technical committees
that create the standards to the executive
board that watches over the health of the
organization. ose under the impression
that we are dominated by manufacturers
need only volunteer to participate to see
how we work.
Having said all this, Greg has made
some good points that my sta and I have
taken to heart. While it’s always possible
to do a better job, we are proud of the
work we do and the e ort we put forth,
making it di cult at times to hear mem-
bers say they are dissatis ed. To improve
this aspect of the way ABYC works, I’m
soliciting PBB readers’ input on this sub-
ject. What do you think, and how can we
be better at what we do? You can reach me
directly at [email protected] or 410–
990–4460 x117 or my cell at 443–995–

  1. In closing, I’d like to say again that
we appreciate and act on any and all feed-
back to the extent possible. If our pro-
grams are not serving the needs of our
customers, then what is the point? I enjoy
talking to any of our members or non-
members who have questions or criticism
about the ABYC. Our goal is to equip you
with some of what you need to make
boating safer, more reliable, and ulti-
    mately the most enjoyable recreational
    experience a person can have.

To the Editor:
I o er my compliments to your publi-
cation; however, I was disappointed by
the Parting Shot in the December/Janu-
ary issue. I feel that Mr. Group was given
free rein to attack ABYC. I have been an
ABYC member for almost ve years now
and have nothing but good things to say
about the organization, especially the
education department. I have been a sys-
tem integrator/technician for more than
30 years and attended countless technical
training classes. ABYC rates very well. No
one organization can educate people the

Relationships: e last point is our
relationships with the industry and all its
parts and components. As I said, ABYC
enlists the help of a third party in deter-
mining how our standards are developed
and who has a say at the table. e Amer-
ican National Standards Institute requires
that one entity cannot dominate the pro-
cess. ABYC’s rule is that no more than

professional organizations and requiring
continuing education units (CEUs) was to
make the opportunities free or as inexpen-
sive as possible. We have a Web platform
and are gathering content. We are striving
to make ABYC your source for CEUs no
matter what organization you are part of.
We have been continuously adding con-
tent you can nd on our website.
