Captain Gartner is a little more direct: “We’re all hoping to go over
to St Barths and kick some ass. We’re going to blow away the other
big boats. I’m talkingM5; I’m talkingMaltese Falcon. We can’t wait

The 5,600 miles she’s done since launch have taken her deep into
the Med to Cyprus and then back to Tarragona in Spain, where
she’s now undergoing some warranty and final fit-out work.
Wherever she’s stopped there’s been a rush of people to the
dockside. “We’ve had jet skis going round us, boats going round us,
drones going round us,” says Gartner. “We were kind of jaded up in
Holland because everything around us was so big, but now that
we’re in the Med where boats are a little bit
more normal-sized and not so commercial,
people see how big we are and also how sleek
we are. Right now, as we’re talking, there are
about 10 people at the back of the boat on the
dock taking photos.”
One thing people won’t see – at least for
now – is the interior. With work not quite
finished, this will have to remain a partial
reveal. The design of her interior, and indeed
the rest of the yacht, was the result of
collaboration between some of the world’s
leading design studios – Ken Freivokh Design,
Nuvolari Lenard, Dykstra Naval Architects
and Gerard Villate. Throw all these talents

sail can be set in just seven minutes at the push of a button, reports
chief oicer AJ Sutherland. “You talk to a lot of the other big sailing
boats, and they don’t get to sail much because they have such
a massive mainsail and it’s actually quite
a big thing to get it out and go sailing,” he says.
“For us, it’s a case of pushing a few buttons,
looking at the wind direction and of we go.”
The giant 68.5 metre high carbon masts have
been made “smart” with sensors throughout
feeding back real-time loading and strain
information – helping the helmsman apply the
perfect amount of trim, and keeping loads
within safe parameters.
All this will help on the regatta circuit,
which is foremost in the mind of the owner.
“My captain and I have our eye on some of the
most prestigious yacht races throughout the
world and we are actively looking at the
schedule,” he says. “Black Pearl’s an incredible
