CREATIVE EFFECTS

O

nce you’ve opened the image you want to work on
in Quick mode, select the Effects tab at the
bottom of the tools sidebar on the right hand side
of the screen. The top item in Elements 14 is the
Smart Looks category, and if you hover the mouse over this
you’ll see a disclosure arrow to the right – click this, and
you’ll see a selection of variations for that effect. All you
have to do now is click on the one you like most and the

effect is applied – there’s nothing else for you to do! Adobe
says that Elements automatically analyses the photo and
generates five different image effects to suit it. This means
you should get some genuine and interesting variations for
each image – the only downside is that you don’t really know
how the software did it!
So let’s take a look at the five Auto Smart Looks Elements
chooses for this male character portrait.

Try Auto Smart Looks

The Quick mode has a range of preset Effects, but Elements 14

adds a new feature for those who just don’t know where to start

Expert adjustments
You can now switch to Expert mode where you’ll
discover that the effect been added to your photo as a
new layer, complete with layer mask, and the original photo is
still there in the layer underneath. You can now paint on the
layer mask to remove or tone down the effect.

Auto Smart Look 5
The Auto5 Smart Look rings the changes once more,
and keep in mind that these Auto Smart Looks will
never be the same twice – the program will interpret and
process each photo differently. You do, however, have some
control over the results once they’ve been created...

Auto Smart Look 2
The Auto1 Smart Look has a distinctly warm tone, but
the Auto2 image is much lighter and more ‘open’, with
a softer, cooler tone. This version has a very different feel
about it, and these Auto Smart Looks do come up with varia-
tions in image treatment that you might not have thought of.

Auto Smart Look 1
In the original photo, our subject has a warm, ruddy
complexion but the low-contrast lighting doesn’t really
bring out the creases and lines in the man’s face. This Auto1
Smart Look, though, gives the contrast a real boost and the
result is more striking, with an appealing ‘vintage’ look.
