AN INTRODUCTION TO PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS

Get to know more about the main menu bar’s commands

Photoshop Anatomy Menu bar overview

The Enhance menu
provides you with
some of the most
useful photo-fixing
commands. These are
split into a top section
for Auto adjustments
[01]) which can
provide a one-click fix,
but may add undesired
results such as shifts
in colour or tone. This
is why there’s also a
section for manual
adjustments [02] to
allow you more control
over the results. A

third section right at
the bottom [03] offers
sharpening tools.
Photoshop Elements
14 introduces a new
Haze Removal tool
[04] and a new Shake
Reduction tool [05].
Both of these have
Auto options in the top
section of the menu
too. Elements 13 users
will note there’s no
longer a Photomerge
option. This has now
moved across to the
Guided mode.

WHERE TO FIND THE
PHOTOMERGE TOOLS

Photomerge is a powerful set
of tools for combining images
in a variety of creative ways. In
Elements 13 these are displayed
on the Enhance menu, but in
Elements 14 they’ve been moved
across to the Guided mode –
so don’t panic, they haven’t
been taken away! Photomerge
Panorama takes multiple shots
from the Photo Bin and repositions
them in a new canvas so that their
overlapping edges are aligned.
The edges are then blended
seamlessly together to create
a huge panoramic image. The
Photomerge commands can save
you lots of time and effort when
retouching your photographs and
you’ll see them used in various
ways throughout this guide.

04 SHORTCUTS

To save time rummaging around in the menu bar’s
sub-menus, you can summon specific commands by
using keyboard shortcuts. You can see a command’s
available shortcuts here.

05 THE FILTER MENU

The Filter menu enables you to apply a variety of
creative effects to your picture. We’ll look at this
command in more detail in chapter 8, where we
turn photos into paintings.

06 ICON ALTERNATIVES

You can summon powerful adjustment layers using the
Layer>New Adjustment menu command. Alternatively,
click the Create new adjustment layer icon at the top of
the Layers panel.

01 MENU BAR

The main menu bar at the top of the Expert mode
workspace contains a range of themed commands
such as File. Click a menu label to access drop-down
menu options such as Open or Copy.

02 SUB-MENUS

Many menu commands have a sub-menu, so you can
perform a range of additional edits. If a sub-menu is
present you’ll see a little triangle icon such as this one.
Move the mouse over the icon to access the sub-menu.

03 COPY AND PASTE

Here we used the Edit>Copy and Edit>Paste menu
commands to extend the tree’s branches over the sky.
You can see the pasted pixels in their own layer in the
Layers panel.
