Nationals offer to
entice girls and boys
The British OK Class
Association is making its
demo boat available for the
nationals at Brixham from
16-19 August, along with the
entry fee paid, with the aim
of encouraging women and
youth sailors into the class.
The move follows a
noticeable increase in
female and youth sailors
in the international class
among its resurgent
Continental and
Antipodean OK fleets.
The modern OK caters
for a competitive weight
range from 70kg to 100kg
and as Karen Robertson
from the class explains:
“While it is very much
sailing in the style of its
bigger sibling the Finn, the
OK is significantly lighter
and doesn’t need Olympian
strength to handle on and
off the water... making it
a potential option for the
taller lady or youth sailor.
With its deep cockpit giving
a comfortable sailing
position both upwind and
down, and freedom of
control systems layout to
suit every physique, it is a
boat that is rewarding and
continually challenging
to sail, with class rules
that promote skill rather
than strength on the
downwind legs.”
The generous offer is
available for any female
or youth sailor who is not
currently sailing an OK and
is interested in joining the
class. Would-be applicants
are invited to email class
secretary Mary Reddyhoff
at secretary@okdinghy.
co.uk with a short
introduction about
themselves and why
they should benefit from
free nationals entry and
use of the demo boat.
The boat is currently
located at Rutland SC,
where it will stay until
mid-March. However,
should you be interested
in giving the OK a try, then
it can be tried out before
the nationals by contacting
the class’s vice-chairman,
Dave Bourne, at:
