CREW CONTROL
A new app helps
captains keep track of
crew working hours.
Workrest means they
don’t have to trawl
through the “hours of
rest” process – instead
crew fill in digital time
sheets, which the
captain can monitor
from his dashboard.

CRANE BRAINS
From a Pullman berth
to a pool that turns
into a dance floor,
multitasking design
makes sense. Cue the
new sundeck crane
from Feebe and Bernd
Weel Design, which
can have a bar, a DJ
booth or a sunscreen
built into it.

CANAL CRUISES
The largest cruise
ships will be re-routed
away from central
Venice, where they
disgorge throngs
of tourists, pump out
fumes and cause
erosion. But critics
say the plan to dredge
a route via Marghera
is unachievable
within the intended
four year
time frame.

Tickets are now available for the 13th edition of these remarkable awards.

FLOATING VILLA, DOCK OPTIONAL

Swelling seas and limited shore access gave rise to
Arkup, a company building the first of its floating,
self-sustaining villas at the RMK Merrill-Stevens
shipyard in Miami. Delivering by year’s end, the
75ft by 32ft villa is solar powered and equipped with
hydraulic spuds that allow it to rise with the tide.
Donald L Blount & Associates was consulted on
naval architecture, and the first villa is designed
with Dutch architectural firm Waterstudio.
“We will start engineering a 50ft by 16ft [villa]
in a few months and expect to have it built by
mid-2019,” says company managing director
and co-founder Nicolas Derouin.
Prices for the 75ft villa range from $2 million
to $3.5 million according to finishes and features,
which could include a floating dock. arkup.com
