Eileen immediately dominated the Second Class yacht
racing on Otago Harbour but was very tricky to handle,
capsizing on numerous occasions. She had a foray
by train to the Lyttelton Regatta in 1904, gaining a
second in the handicap yacht race. Eileen went through
a succession of owners until she disappears from the
record in 1939.
WAITUNA
Boatbuilder Harry Beer of Riverton built WAITUNA, a
typical southern type of double-ended launch, for his
son, also Harry Beer, in July 1911. She was 32ft 6in
overall, 7ft 4in beam and drew 2ft 6in, built of kauri and
oregon, and powered by a 5hp Standard engine.
For passenger work she was open, as in this image
up the Pourakino River, but had hatches when fishing in
the rough waters of Foveaux Strait. Typically, she would
bring home two tons of blue cod for a couple of days’
fishing. She also carried the mail to Centre Island. BNZ
