sobering experience. In fact, over the Christmas and
New Year ‘silly season’ the sound is busy and can become
very choppy from a mix of wind, tide and boat traffic.
Take it slow and keep your eyes peeled.
Dieffenbach Point’s a popular spot for fishing but
when there’s a fast-running tide against the wind this
point and the extending underwater reef can be very
unpleasant. I tend to give it a wide berth.
Tory Channel needs little introduction to most
boaties with its rich whaling and farming history. In NW
conditions it’s generally quite sheltered and offers plenty
of opportunities for fishing, exploring and picnicking.
Cod, tarakihi and gurnard abound but if you’re
anchoring, it’s worth remembering that the further
out you go kelp beds and rocky underwater areas can
create snags. The speed and ferocity with which the tide
moves through the channel is impressive.
HERITAGE
It’s well worth spending the time to explore the
Channel to understand of some of the country’s
early maritime history. New Zealand’s first and last
onshore whaling stations were both located here, the
first set up in 1827 at Te Awaiti by John Guard.
The Perano Whaling Station, in neighbouring
Fisherman’s Bay, was the last, closing in December
1964 after which commercial whaling was banned in
New Zealand waters. The whaling stations are a great
place to moor and for exploring.
