and was showing some of its popular, tried-and-tested,
mock-clinker GRP leisure fi shing boats. It would be hard to
ascribe true ‘classic’ status, but some of these, particularly the
Family Fisherman, its fi rst design three decades ago, have a
timeless sort of appeal, with sheerlines, stems and transoms that
can’t have changed much in centuries.
The new model is the Waverley Dinghy (more of which later),
and our eye was particularly caught by the Arran Dinghy, with
its pleasantly sweeping lines. Like all Highlander boats, she has
an air of well-built, no-nonsense robustness, good build and a
great price. She’s for pottering, fi shing or as a yacht tender, and
comes with plenty of built-in buoyancy and (as standard) an
all-round PVC fender, rowlocks (they are said to row well),
non-slip sole and stainless steel bow eye. Mount an outboard
(max 3.5hp) and you’re away. She’s 9ft 4in (2.9m) in length, with
a beam of 4ft 5in (c1.3m) and will carry three adults at RCD

Herreshoff Columbian
We spotted this at the London Boat Show on IBTC Lowestoft’s stand.
She’s a sprit-sailed catboat dinghy, built in larch on oak, with a
laminated tiller, kick-up rudder and daggerboard. She was
built by students at the school to the Columbian dinghy design by
NG Herreshoff.
Herreshoff designed her in the late 1800s as a lifeboat type to be
carried aboard the grand America’s Cup yacht Columbia and the
design informed all his later dinghies. She’s 11ft 6in (3.5m) long, with a
4ft (1.2m) beam and draught of 6ft (1.8m) or 1ft 5in (43cm) with the
daggerboard up. She carries 60sq ft (5.6m^2 ) of sail area.
