Classic Boat — March 2018

(Sean Pound) #1

BROKERAGE

Built in 1952 at the yard of James Silver and sons and possibly
the last surviving “Bain 72”. She long proved herself as an
exceptional sea-boat with her trusty Gardner diesel engines
and Vosper Maxi Fin stabilizers. Acquired by her current owner
as a project she was given a keel up restoration at the yard of
Stirling and Son in Plymouth during 2015-16. Fully restored and
with an interior furnished and decorated in immaculate good
taste - LIFE AQUATIC is now a superior boat both structurally
and cosmetically to the one Silvers launched in 1952 and with
3 double cabins; a single and crew accommodation she is an
incredibly exciting and unique option in turn key condition.

John Leather noted naval architect himself and prolifi c writer
considered Arthur Payne to be second to none in the design of
fast cruising and racing yachts – the equal of William Fife and
GL Watson and ahead of Joseph Soper in this regard - and
JAVELIN rightly fi ts into this category. Leather went on to say
how pleased their owners and crews were to be sailing such
seaworthy yachts. Assiduously restored in 2006, she is hard to
tell apart from the Beken pictures taken a hundred years ago.
Notwithstanding; modern systems have been discreetly fi tted to
make her luxurious to live on and a wonderful family boat.

The Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter type has long been held in the
highest of esteem as the perfect all round sailing vessel, and
ALPHA completely fi ts that billing. Her long and interesting life
has been guaranteed to last many more years after a restoration
undertaken by and under the supervision of some of the best
possible practitioners of their craft, for owners who really knew
what they wanted. Independent of all the superb craftsmanship,
the key element that has been restored in ALPHA is her ability
from birth as a superbly easily handled vessel under sail and
power by just two people, whilst offering the most comfortable of
accommodation for long periods with plenty of space for friends.

68 ft Clinton Crane 12 Metre Sloop 1937

The America’s Cup class 12 Metre, GLEAM was built in
1937, a time when rare mahoganies were hand selected and
craftsmanship was at an all time high. More than just a Twelve
Metre, GLEAM is hailed by yachtsmen as the grande dame of
the fl eet, having been painstakingly restored - and she has been
maintained by the same family for more than 40 years. GLEAM
has her original fully appointed interior offering comfort for all
guests with ample seating, a galley and an enclosed private
head complete with a copper basin. She has never stopped
winning races since she was built and often beats the more
recent classic 12s. Realistic offers will be properly considered.

NORTHERN LIGHT’s pedigree is hard to question – a pre war
12 Metre from the board of Sparkman & Stephens and built by
Nevins; her beauty is effortless and so is her charm. She has all
the power of a 12 but is somehow less brutal than the later boats
yet arguably just as potent. She has been a survivor throughout
her 77 years but most dramatically when she was rescued from
the bottom of a lake in Michigan in 1984. She spent 2 winters
there being put back together before being sailed to Newport
in 1986. She is USCG certifi ed for 13 passengers and 3 crew.
Realistic offers will be properly considered.
