followed the end of Roman occupation.
It’s especially interesting to compare
the Roman radiate coins found in the
Dorchester Hoard (c. AD 250s) with
those from Cunetio Hoard twenty years
later. The earlier coins are generally
silver. Later ones are base metal.
Room 69a also holds a fascinating
display of forged coins and coining
equipment, such as the clay coin moulds
found on the Somerset levels which
were used to make fake silver denarii of
Emperors Septimus, Severus, Elagabalus
and Alexander. Clipped coins, coin
blanks and iron coin dies (used to make
‘barbarous radiates’) also feature in a
small but packed exhibition that is full
of the curious and the interesting.
