Digital scanners are a wonderful invention but still no substitute for the

human eye. Even though we use a £5,000 daylight calibrated scanner ...

...for the truest, most colour-accurate images our team edits

the colour of All 3,511 stamps illustrated closely colour-matching

to the original stamps

.... So now you may
know the reason why
the stamps you win
actually look like the
stamps you saw in
the auction catalogue
... which may be
something that you
have to be careful of
when bidding in other
auctions with fuzzy low
quality images ... usually
there’s a reason why
collectors compliment us by
cutting out our stamp images ...
now you know why
Of course, I can hear you saying,
“none of this comes cheap” ... and it
is true. Just to print, post/distribute
6,250 physical catalogues to collectors like you, all over the

world costs £50,000 each
auction. Now consider
that an additional 1,500
collectors/dealers
globally view each
U P A auction catalogue
“virtually” (nice word
that) on-line – which
makes it all the more
amazing that 90% of
bidders are successful.
Just try comparing that
with other stamp auctions –
especially public stamp auctions
that only have 300 different bidders
... and unlike U P A cannot/will not
guarantee each lot.
Possibly, just possibly, there’s one
tiny question hanging unspoken in the
back of your mind ... and that is ...

“how can any auction sustain such high quality production

costs and be more competitive than others?”
... and the reason why can only be attributed to ‘scale’
... when you offer Massive Philatelic Choice in a Unique
Reducing Estimate System it permits the collector to
benefit from the most cost-effective system of handling
stamps in the industry ... put simply you benefit from the fact
that simply everything sells – compare this to the stamp
fair or dealer where you return time and time again to see
nothing but the same old chestnuts offered for sale ... so that
in time you stop going back. This is the reason why - if you
have nigh on 2,000 different bidders (90% successful) that
you will see massive NEW choice each time you participate
and why each time (I hope) you will wish to participate in
supporting this unique collector-friendly auction system ...
Finally, and I’ve never, in 43 years full-time philately, ever
seen this written about before ... collectors have the chance
to determine / set values for themselves. Let me explain,
here’s an example – I saw a fine used £5 orange advertised
recently for £7,500 on blued paper and another on white
paper for £3,500. Only one example was illustrated ... not the
one at £7,500. The only thing you know is that a stated to be
fine used £5 orange on blued paper is being offered to you for
£7,500. You simply must see a picture, better still scans (for
this value of front and back) to determine how well-centred

the actual stamp is, is it creased – does it have any trace of
crayon mark, are there any short perfs, pinholes or creases ...
is it guaranteed ...?
The problem with ‘fixed’ price expensive stamps is that
one stamp may be worth £7,500 but one price doesn’t suit
all ... hence the condition of another may appear fine but is
it? What is a fair price? In stamps – unless truly an ‘industry-
standard’ unmounted mint 1948 £1 Silver Wedding that
everybody understands the standard expected ... each stamp
commands its own price / value which is why I urge you to
seek comparisons so that the variations on scarce expensive
stamps such as heavy / light postmark are reflected in the
price you ultimately pay ... so bidding for such stamps at
auction is a good way for you to factor in condition into the
winning price you, or somebody else pays ...
