for seven years. Zain’s paternal
grandfather was Tamil and her
grandmother traced her roots back
to Kolkata and China. She is now
engaged to an Irish-
American, Brendan McGetrick,
writer and curator, Director at
Strelka Institute, Moscow, and
spends her time between Moscow,
London (where her mother lives),
Beijing (where her father lives) and
Indonesia (where her sister lives).
Zain’s incredible access to the world
is partly by choice but mostly by
serendipity (there you go again),
rightfully making her the youngest
director at 32 in this increasingly
inchoate world of contemporary art.
Who better to navigate this world

of disappearing boundaries and
integrated realities than one who
effortlessly seems to carry the globe
in her pocket?
Excerpts from the interview.

Every art event/fair that is rooted in
a city, assumes quite unconsciously
the characteristics of the city itself.
Do you find that with India Art Fair
and Delhi? In what ways does that
knowledge (if at all crucial) affects
the work you are doing for IAF?
I agree that every art fair
reflects its context. We have a
particularly interesting backdrop
with Delhi – the convergence
between the historic and the
contemporary, artistic tradition
and the momentum of a booming
