Materials
Surfaces: laminated hardboard panel; stretched can-vas that’s been wet-sanded; hollow-core doors (interiordoors without a door-knob hole, available at most home-improvement stores) prepared by alternating gesso withwet-sanding and then sealing with clear polyacrylicvarnishMedia: Sharpie fi ne point permanent markers; ExpoVis-à-Vis dry erase markers (to draw contour lines thatI’ll later remove); Sakura Pigma Micron pens for smallerworks on paperOther: paper towels to wipe off the dry erase marker lines- Materializing Forms
I continue adding lines and start responding to more specifi cinformation in the reference photos, applying ink more slowlythan at the start. At this stage I’m pickier about which markertips I use since I need more precision to get into the increas-ingly small white areas left between lines.- Sharpening or Softening Information
I continue adding and erasing lines, reinforcing implied edgesor shapes and diffusing shapes in other areas. I continuallystep back from the piece to make decisions about the wholeimage, even while working so closely and specifi cally. After adjusting the lines to my preferences, Labyrinth 341(marker and ink on Masonite, 24x48) is complete. ■
